"Redbelt" Released in Theatres Today PDF E-mail
User Rating: / 0

“Redbelt”, the latest movie to be based off of the world of mixed martial arts, was released in theatres nationwide earlier today. Unlike “Never Back Down”, which was released earlier this year, the cast of the film has some more notable names - Tim Allen and Chiwetel Ejiofor for starters.

MMA fans will be pleased to find that a wealth of major players in the sport are featured in the flick as well. Those who see the film may enjoy the presence of UFC commentator Mike Goldberg, grappling wizard Jean Jacques Machado, radio host Scott Ferrall, and longtime veteran Enson Inoue. However the biggest part played by an MMA presence is that of current UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture, who plays the role of Dylan Flynn.

I haven’t seen the movie just yet, (I plan to this weekend and will give a full report afterwards) but early reports suggest that while the film may be lacking in action/fight scenes, it’s still a decent movie. James Brydon of Rogers Sportsnet gives his must-read take here.

Report: Hardcore Championship Fighting Folds PDF E-mail

Edmonton-based Hardcore Championship Fighting has reportedly gone out of business according to recent comments made by promotional CEO Keith Crawford.

The news comes from Sherdog.com, which was informed by Crawford that the organization had been forced to fold after a potential sale to Canadian television network The Score fell apart.

Crawford believed that the promotion, which had essentially frog-leaped TKO Championship Fighting as Canada's premiere mixed martial arts show after signing a slew of big-name fighters over the past year, expected HCF to move into contention to become MMA’s next big company with the move.

An official announcement regarding the purchase was expected to come at some point this weekend, when Crawford and company were slated to have held their latest show, which based on the fighters rumored to have been participating, would have been the organization’s biggest showing to date.

The fates of those fighters under contract with HCF are unknown at this time. Crawford has also mentioned that he and business partner Dave Houshiar will continue promoting inside the sport, but as separate entities.

California native Brian Cobb extended his current winning streak to six, earning a unanimous decision over UFC veteran Diego Saraiva to win the Palace Fighting Championship lightweight title at the organization’s latest show last night in Lemoore.

Cobb used his superior wrestling to take Saraiva down to the mat right from the start of the fight. While only having to fend off a handful of submission attempts, Cobb continually worked an effective ground-and-pound attack through three rounds en route to gaining his first taste of championship gold inside the promotion.

The three other title fights featured last night saw the belt change hands each time. Jorge Evangelista handed Art Arciniega his second career loss in winning the PFC featherweight title, Nate Loughran submitted Kenny Ento with a rear naked choke to earn the PFC middleweight belt, and Shawn Klarcyk forced Jason Georgianna to tap out courtesy of a second-round kneebar to capture the interim PFC bantamweight strap.

Complete results from the event:

Brian Cobb def. Diego Saraiva - Unanimous Decision
Jorge Evangelista def. Art Arciniega - Unanimous Decision
Nate Loughran def. Kenny Ento - Submission (Rear Naked Choke)
