Diaz-Inoue Finalizes DREAM's Third Effort PDF E-mail

With a scheduled lightweight bout between Nick Diaz and Katsuya Inoue now seemingly set to happen once again, the fight card for DREAM’s second effort in as many weeks is now complete.

The event, which will once again take place at the Saitama Super Arena in Japan, will be highlighted by the second-round of the promotion’s inaugural lightweight grand prix tournament. Second-round grand prix matchups set to happen include Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Luis Buscape, Mitsuhiro Ishida vs. Caol Uno, who will be fighting as a late-entrant into the tourney, and Joachim Hansen vs. EliteXC’s Eddie Alvarez.

Take note that Shinya Aoki, who won an unanimous decision over Gesias Calvancante last week, will face Katsuhiko Nagata in the fourth tournament bout at the organization’s June 15th show, thus why only three grand prix bouts are slated for tomorrow morning/night in Japan.

Jason “Mayhem” Miller, who has not fought since avenging a previous loss to Tim Kennedy in December, will take on K-1 Hero’s veteran Katsuyori Shibata, loser of his last three fights.

Those in North America will be able to see the event live on HDNet starting at 3 AM ET. A replay of the event is slated to air at 4 PM ET on Sunday afternoon for those who don’t feel like staying up until the wee hours of the morning to watch the show from Tokyo.

The full card for the event is as follows:

DREAM Lightweight Grand Prix Bouts:

Tatsuya Kawajiri vs. Luiz Firmino
Mitsuhiro Ishida vs. Caol Uno
Joachim Hansen vs. Eddie Alvarez

Additional Fights:

Jason Miller vs. Katsuyori Shibata
Nick Diaz vs. Katsuya Inoue

Jara Stops Heath at PureCombat PDF E-mail

It was a night where two longtime mixed martial arts veterans continued their comeback into the new age of the sport. Unfortunately for Steve Heath and Kelly Dullanty, it wasn’t such a good night.

Gladiator Challenge veteran Jaime Jara, who has only lost once in his last twelve bouts, used strong takedown defense to force Heath, who had only fought once since March 2004, onto his back throughout the first two rounds of the fight. It was in the third round where Jara was finally able to pass Heath’s guard, landing in side control and pounding away with unanswered strikes until referee Josh Rosenthal stepped in to halt the bout.

The co-main event saw Lance Wipf land a perfect Superman punch that sent a woozy Dullanty, who had not fought since losing to Matt Serra at UFC 36 in 2002, straight to the canvas, causing the fight to be stopped just nine seconds in. Any ideas of the fight being stopped prematurely were quickly wiped away as Dullanty was barely able to stand upright on his fight afterwards.

Complete results from the event courtesy of Sherdog.com:

Jaime Jara def. Steve Heath - TKO (Strikes)
Lance Wipf def. Kelly Dullanty - KO (Punch)
Isaac De Jesus def. Cruz Gomez - Split Decision
Michael Brown def. Rolando Torres - TKO (Strikes)
Richard Chavez def. Eric Jacob - Submission (Rear Naked Choke)
Travis Bennett def. Yonas Gegreeg - Submission (Rear Naked Choke)
Juan Orsua def. Derrick Easterling - TKO (Strikes)
Joe Vea def. Arby Magtibay - TKO (Strikes)
Brandon Cash def. Anthony Von Rekowski - Submission (Arm-Triangle)

On the same day that Affliction Clothing makes it's official entrance into the world of promoting mixed martial arts events, details regarding four signed preliminary bouts for it’s upcoming planned "Banned" show on July 19th at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California have come to light.

The news comes from Sergio Non of USA Today, who confirmed the fights with Affliction VP Tom Atencio.

IFL veteran Savant Young, who recently earned a huge upset win over former Shooto featherweight title contender Takeshi Inoue last weekend, will take on WEC and TKO veteran Mark Hominick in the most high-profile preliminary bout.

Additional dark matches include UFC veteran Justin Levens vs. Ray Lazama, Mike Pyle vs. Brett Cooper, and J.J. Ambrose vs. Patrick Speight.

Atencio also informed Non that Ben Rothwell will indeed fight at the event but an opponent for the Miletich Fighting Systems product has yet to have been determined. Various sources have been reporting that former UFC heavweight champion Andrei Arlovski may very well be Rothwell’s counterpart in the cage but it’s still unknown whether or not he will continue to free agency after finishing out the remainder of his deal with the UFC two months ago.

Contracts for a heavyweight clash between Aleksander Emelianenko and Paul Buentello have also reportedly been sent out to both fighters but have not yet been returned signed.

The potential fight card for the event now looks like this:

Main Card:

Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia
Josh Barnett vs. Pedro Rizzo
Matt Lindland vs. Fabio Negao
Mike Whitehead vs. Renato Sobral
Aleksander Emelianenko vs. Paul Buentello
Ben Rothwell vs. TBA

Preliminary Bouts:

Mark Hominick vs. Savant Young
Justin Levens vs. Ray Lazama
Mike Pyle vs. Brett Cooper
J.J. Ambrose vs. Patrick Speight

Torn ACL Sidelines Calvancante PDF E-mail

Just over a week since suffering his second career loss at the hands of Shinya Aoki, two-time K-1 Hero’s lightweight tournament champion Gesias Calvancante will be required to undergo surgery to repair a torn meniscus and ACL and will likely be unable to fight until the end of this year.

Calvancante revealed the extent of his injury to Greg Savage on Sherdog’s ”Savage Dog Show” earlier today.

“The first time I was hurt in my career, it was my hand,” Calvancante said on the show. “That just after I won the (K-1 Hero’s) title so I was like alright, a little vacation. But now I lost so I don’t want that long of a break in between fights. I don’t want to wait 5-6 months without a fight.”

Calvancante’s knee troubles have now extended all the way back to last fall when the re-injuring of his surgically repaired knee during training prevented Calvancante from originally fighting Aoki at Yarennoka! on New Year's Eve. It’s unknown if the tears were suffered in the same knee once again.
