Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art which focuses on grappling with an emphasis on ground fights. The purpose is to gain a dominant position and to make your attacker give in as soon as possible. It's based on an adaptation of the traditional Japanese jujutsu, named "Jiu-do". The idea is that soft beats hard. In other words, a smaller, weaker person can defend themselves against a bigger and stronger opponent with the right techniques and movements. You can practise it as self defence during special grappling tournaments and mixed martial arts tournaments. Sparring and continually repeating your movements play an important part in training. It's the achievement which matters, especially during matches and tournaments. |
