two thumbs up

PoorBest

Friday classes are for me and I know for other people especially the girls, a really good complement to the Mon/Wed classes. I find that I really like having a slightly more relaxed atmosphere and a distinctly smaller class. I can totally understand and support the need for more discipline in a bigger class, but having casual fridays means we get to "let our hair down" a bit and fool around a little, and I do emphasis a little, on the mat. We still maintain a fair amount of discipline but it means we can ask each other more for feedback or to demonstrate bits we don't always understand or just experiment a bit here and there. The instructor while i'll say isn't technically that orthodox at times, has really succeeded in creating an emotionally safe atmosphere particularly for the women. And for me, I have to say that's one of the most important things I need in a learning environment. I have a great need to feel safe, both emotionally and physically, and probably way more so than most people would realise, and so I just am so happy that our Friday instructor understands this and does his level best to adjust when he sees one of us being scared.

I notice he also does more daring stuff that in a way the small class allows in that he teaches high breakfalls and some of the more arcane stuff which I think appeals a lot more to the guys and keeps them coming. So it's a good mix all around.

All I can say is two thumbs up for friday class.
